Festive season and fasting are kind of synonymous in our society. Whatever be our beliefs, choices, or reasons, we tend to observe fasts during several festivals.

The concept of fasting came into existence from a spiritual point of view. Fasting was observed on particular auspicious days, as it was believed that those days are to be dedicated to one’s spiritual growth. The day or series of days used to be spent in prayers and meditations, leaving daily schedules aside. It was a way to detoxify one’s body and had a rejuvenating and calming effect.

Gone are those days when people could follow those rituals as described above. Today, even though you fast, you need to carry on with your daily duties both at home and at work. So, it is imperative that you follow the steps that can help you do it effectively. Fasting, if not done with care, can prove dangerous for your body.

Here are a few tips we have compiled to help you fast effectively.

  1. Stay hydrated. Dehydration can lead to issues like fatigue, headaches, dry mouth, and much more. So, it is mandatory that you maintain a good fluid intake while fasting. You are not eating as per your regular pattern anyway. If you don’t keep your body hydrated either, you have all the chances of passing out, which is not what you want.

  2. Eat nuts to supplement energy. A daily dose of walnuts, almonds, raisins, etc would keep your energy level intact even though you are fasting.

  3. Choose your food ingredients well. Pick complex carbohydrates, which would help you retain your energy levels.

  4. Eat small meals. Don’t binge after breaking fast. Though it does sound tempting, having a feast after fasting is counterproductive and leaves you tired and bloated.

  5. Stay away from aerated drinks. Choose natural drinks like buttermilk, fresh juices instead.

  6. Go easy on yourself. Try not to be too strict on yourself. Flexibility is the key to have a successful fast.

  7. Stick to mild exercises when you are fasting. Heavy exercises can cause harm to your body. Lack of exercise is not recommended either.

Fasting is indeed a part and parcel of celebrations in our country. However, one needs to be careful while observing it. Also, fasting may result in complications if you have existing health issues. So, be cautious and judicious while following these rituals. Have a great time during the festivals!
